Bronze production Wax
Once Fran Nile had completed his original sculpture in clay he needed help to get a final bronze cast. He contacted Dinsdale Petch of The Running Dog Art Foundry in East Buckland, Devon.

Dinsdale specialises in bronze sculptures and was keen to get involved in the project. Every bust is made from start to finish by Dinsdale using traditional bronze casting techniques, a very basic description of which follows:

  •  A latex mould is made from the original sculpture
  • A wax is cast from the latex mould
  • The wax is coated in layers upon layers of limestone sand
  • The lime coated wax is fired in a kiln to melt the wax and leave an exact negative shell
  • The shell is set up so molten bronze can be poured into it
  • The mould is split and the bronze is 'finished'
  • The bronze, which is around 5mm thick all around is set on a wooden stand

If you have any questions Dinsdale can be reached at rundog@supanet.com
